Over the last week I’ve been listening to one of my favourite artists, Josh Garrels. Garrels is a Christian artist from the Portland, OR area, and is one of the most brilliant lyricists I’ve come across.

His song writing is creative and poetic, he addresses issues of life and faith, and his musicianship spans a breadth of styles. Flood Waters is a beautiful song, and since I had to clean up a bit of a mess after a particularly heavy downpour this week, I thought it would be an appropriate title. Then again, I hear Vancouver’s had quite the storm recently as well. It’s been just over a week since I returned to Chad, and so far things have basically picked up where they left off in early July. My work continues to be focused on MCC’s partnership with the Department of Ethics, Peace & Justice (EPJ), and I will continue to be involved in less time-consuming ways in some of MCC’s other projects.

During my SALT term I was living with a host family, but now as a Service Worker I am out on my own. Until we were able to find long-term accommodations though, I have been staying with friends at Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF).

The MAF compound is located very close to EPJ’s offices, so I have enjoyed being a short walk from work each day. Living on my own has been very different from living with a host family. Although there can certainly be moments of loneliness, I have been blessed to have regular contact with friends and family back home. Living in close proximity to other English-speaking Westerners on the compound also provides opportunities for conversation and discussion on current events and catching up. Significantly, living on my own has meant having the opportunity to prepare my own meals and choose what I’m eating. Although N’Djamena certainly has limited access to a lot of food products we take for granted in Canada, I have managed to make do quite well with coming up with creatively flavourful and healthy dishes. While a lot of produce like celery, broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus aren’t obtainable in N’Djamena, we are still able to purchase carrots, potatoes, cucumber, some bell peppers, garlic, onion, hot peppers, and tomatoes.

Rice, baguettes and pasta are all available, and these can be a tempting staple, but I’m doing my best to avoid heavy carb-based meals. Having previously worked at Camp Sagitawa as Head Cook in 2012 and 2014, I have greatly enjoyed my return to the kitchen, and as I had expected, having some domestic responsibilities filling some time has made the days pass quite quickly.

While I am currently staying at the MAF compound, I will be moving to permanent accommodations within the next two weeks. We’ve found a compound currently housing a missionary couple, and I will soon be occupying the second dwelling on the property. Although my place needs some work done to it, I am looking forward to moving into my own space and making it my own. The compound is in the same neighbourhood as EPJ’s offices, so I will be able to walk or take a short moto ride to work. Having another Western couple on the property means I won’t be responsible for addressing utility bills or paying the property guard, and there will someone around to chat with a bit as well. Although it was incredibly difficult to say goodbye to my friends and family, I think I am settling well into the familiar patterns of life in N’Djamena.

I have so appreciated the support of loved ones back home, and feel welcomed among my Chadian friends here in the capital. Do You Remember? This one is a bit more personal, so if you’re one of my random readers I don’t know what you’ll do with this post, haha. So as many of you know, I am a major listener of music, and enjoy listening to a wide variety of styles. My classical training and personal pursuits in jazz and various rock styles, mixed with an eye-opening course on the social influence of pop music in the 20 th century during my BA have led to an ever-expanding iTunes library. From Aaron Prichett to Fall Out Boy to Nat King Cole to TobyMac to ZZ Top, I enjoy quite an eclectic mix.

Over the last few months I have been working through a personal listening assignment to go through the entire library, refreshing me on some albums I haven’t heard in nearly two years. Music is known to be one of the most emotive art forms, and I often find specific songs and albums remind me of friends, family and cherished memories. In an amusing attempt to deny the stereotype that my MCC rep has put on my personal blog posts, here’s a list of pieces of music that brings memories flooding back. A lot of friends and family will find themselves listed.
